1 dead, 6 injured in Bongaigaon crash

There are two children among the injured

A 28-year old monk died on the spot, while six others were seriously injured, when the Maruti van, they were travelling in, crashed near Bongaigaon, Assam, yesterday afternoon.

As of last evening, it was not clear whether the van collided with another vehicle or went off road.

The deceased monk was the brother-in-law of the driver, a police constable in Phuentsholing, and the family was on their way to Martshala, Samdrupjongkhar.

Police sources from Phuentsholing said they were informed about the incident at 2:30pm yesterday afternoon, and police sought help from a member of Bhutan India Friendship Association in Chapaiguri.

“The BIFA member told us that he informed Bongaigoan police and took the injured victims to a hospital in Bongaigaon,” a Phuentsholing police officer said.

Gelephu police, who were informed about the incident around 4pm, left for Bongaigaon and had not returned as of last evening.

The vehicle had entered at the border checkpost gate in Phuentsholing to go to Samdrupjongkhar on January 29, but could not leave that day because of a strike in Assam.
