60 year old gets three years

Thimphu district court’s bench V yesterday sentenced a 60-year-old man to three years imprisonment for possession of tobacco without proof of tax payments.

On December 12 last year, Ap Yeshey from Shari, Paro bought 947 packets of chewing tobacco, 400 sticks of Navy cut, 240 sticks of flakes, 36 grams of golden tobacco, and 50 grams of NC jati from the Phuntsholing border town in Jaigoan.

He entered the country without paying any proof of tax and duty payments for possessing tobacco beyond the permissible quantity.

Ap Yeshey had violated section 11 of the Tobacco control act and was punished with felony of the fourth degree, which means he is liable for three years non compoundable imprisonment.

He was kept in Thimphu detention centre for a month and has to serve prison term for two years, eleven months and two days. He has ten days to appeal.
