Kelzang Wangchuk | Samdrupjongkhar
Gorsewar Town Football Club (GTFC) from Assam, India defeated Crong FC from Zhemgang 3-0 to win the first Samdrupjongkhar Championship on October 19.
GTFC dominated the game from the get go. Two early goals in the fifth and 15th minute from striker Dhiraj and midfielder Jiki respectively, gave the Assamese a comfortable first half.
Team Crong FC fought their way back in the second half with multiple opportunities. However, they failed to capitalised on the openings. Another goal in the 81st minute sealed the deal for the visitors from the neighboring state.
The winners took home a cash prize of Nu 300,000 along with a trophy while the runners-up were awarded a cash prize of Nu 200,000 and trophy. The 1st runners-up bagged a cash prize of Nu 100,000.
A total of 21 teams including four from Assam took part in the three-week tournament organised by the Samdrupjongkhar Sports Association (SJSA).
Organising secretary, Norbu Zangpo, said that they faced challenges of not having trained and professional officials during the tournament. “It would help if the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) could provide trainings or trained officials during such tournaments.”
He said besides the hefty cash prizes, participation has also remained low in Samdrupjongkhar, adding that playing during the daytime is difficult in a hot place like Samdrupjongkhar.
“It would be helpful if agencies concerned could install flood lighting at the ground so that we can conduct more games during the night,” he said.
The tournament was organised to promote healthy lifestyle through sports and to bring sports enthusiasts together. “It is not a profit-oriented tournament,” said Norbu Zangpo.
SD Eastern Bhutan Coal Company and SD Eastern Bhutan Ferro Silicon Private Limited supported the tournament.
