A 20-year-old third year Bhutanese student studying Interior Designing in Acharya Group of Institutes in Bengaluru, India committed suicide on May 2.

She was a recipient of government’s undergraduate scholarship.

Indian media reported that the girl lived in the college hostel with three of her friends. She left college at around 12.15 pm and locked herself in. Her roommates found the door locked from inside and there was no response when called.

Two Bhutanese officials from Vellore, one of whom was a relative of the victim, claimed the body. The body was flown to Bhutan on Friday, May 3.

A friend of the victim, who did not want to be named, said that the reports in the Indian media were wrong and insensitive.

“Her father was very supportive and loved what she was doing,” he said.
