The Bank of Bhutan (BOB) has finally crossed one more frontier
by opening its first branch in Trashiyangtse covering 19 out of 20 dzongkhags.
In an opening ceremony on June 17, it saw 32 saving accounts being opened.
The Trashiyangtse dzongdag, Lham Dorji, said that the need for a bank was
long felt and had been repeatedly expressed by the people at the DYT.
“I hope it will encourage the habit of savings and increase business in the
dzongkhag,” he added.
The managing director of the BOB, Tshering Dorji said that, at
present, the branch will be purely service-oriented and was set up without
an eye at the commercial viability. But, he added, that the dzongkhag has
the potential to grow though it will take time.
