Brick making is not a good business in Gelephu. Of the three manufacturing units in the town, one—Kuenga Choling Concrete Bricks—has pulled its shutters down after three years of operation.

Proprietor Chhimi Dorji said that there was limited market for local bricks. He decided to close the firm down for good last year. One must produce bricks in large quantities in order to stay afloat in the business, he added. “Concrete bricks require long curing period to achieve good quality. Given the small market, mass production did us no good.”
