A delegation from California State Senate, the USA, led by the Senator Toni G. Atkins, is in the country to learn about Gross National Happiness (GNH), environment, women issues and the judiciary of Bhutan.

Tandi Dorji of Tara tours and Trek said the delegation was here to learn about GNH and to work out a way to replicate it in California. “They wanted to learn about how it is working in Bhutan and to take back the lessons and implement out there.”

The delegation met with the foreign minister and other senior government officials.

Senator Toni G. Atkins said that Bhutan was the only country in the world that is carbon negative and “felt there was opportunity to learn from Bhutan’s society and culture.”

Senator Atkins said that Bhutan inspired the team.

“Issue around climate change is global. We have to have this relationship if we want be successful, and we look at Bhutan.”

The delegation will leave on November 21.
