Basketball: The opening of the Coca Cola inter-departmental tournament saw women’s team scoring more baskets than men’s team at the Swimming Pool Complex yesterday.

In the men’s category, department of revenue and customs (DRC) defeated Bhutan National Bank (BNB) ‘B’, 39-12. Kuensel Corporation Limited beat BNB ‘A’, 44-26.

While in the women’s category Bank of Bhutan (BoB) beat Bhutan Insurance Limited (BIL), 54-31.

BoB’s Dechen Wangmo scored 13 baskets, the highest so far followed by Leki Wangmo of BIL with eight baskets.

Bank of Bhutan (BoB) trounced the much younger side of Bhutan Insurance Limited (BIL) by 23 points. Until the end of the second quarter, a neck-to-neck competition between the two teams entertained the few spectators to the fullest.

However, the seesaw battle came to an end when BoB took over the game with a huge lead of 18 points at the end of the third quarter.

Dechen Wangmo said that the victory was a result of team effort and good coordination among the players. “We played as a team today. Everyone is a part of this victory,” said Dechen. “Since this was our first game, we were a little nervous. We hope we can deliver a better performance in the next games.”

BIL’s Leki Wangmo said that since most of the players on the team are playing after a very long time, it is difficult to cope up with pace of the game. “We have been practicing for a week now, and we are progressing and it’s a good progress,” she said. The team hopes to do better in the next game.

In the third game, both Kuensel and BNB ‘A’, started with a defensive approach. A total of only 10 baskets were scored in the first quarter.

However, as the game progressed, debutant team, Kuensel started to find comfort in the game. At the end of the second quarter, Kuensel took the lead of 14 points. With eight baskets, Kuensel’s Tshering Dorji scored the highest in the third game.

The last game between Tashi Cell and Bhutan Development Bank ended in favour of Tashi Cell, 37-21.
