Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) defeated Bhutan Development Bank Limited (BDBL) 3-2 in the opening match of the fourth edition of the Financial Institution (FI) Cup at the Tenzin Sports Complex in Serbithang, Thimphu yesterday.

A total of 11 teams from Thimphu are taking part in the competition.

RMA took an early lead in the fifth minute from Tashi Tobgay’s volley from inside the box. Tashi Yezer doubled their lead in the 28th minute.

The third goal came in 53rd minute.

BDBL, however, responded a minute later with Dorji Penjor’s goal. Sonam Tobgay scored another for the team in the 69th minute.

The theme for the year’s tournament is ‘game for unity’ with an objective to keep close professional relationship and unity among the financial institutions.

BDBL’s skipper, Tashi Tshering, said that he was happy with the game. “More than the results, the tournament is to bring people together. It is also an opportunity to meet new people,” he said. “We will definitely perform better in the remaining games.”

RMA’s Tshering D Dorji said, “Our team is participating to foster relationship with other teams.”

All the teams will play ten games each before the finals in November.

Bank of Bhutan are the defending champions.

RMA is organising the competition.
