The annual moenlam chenmo of Bumthang concluded yesterday with a sangchoed (smoke offering).

His Holiness the Je Khenpo presided over the week-long moenlam chenmo.

At the event, His Holiness awarded an appreciation and recognition letter to former secretary of Dzongkha Development Commission (DDC), Dasho Sangay Dorji, for his contribution in preserving and promoting the national language.

 Dasho Sangay Dorji, 74, is known for writing numerous dzongkha books, and two dictionaries.

 He is from Tang Chhutoed and served as DDC secretary for 27 years. He also served as the first secretary for the National Assembly from 1968-1986.

 He was conferred the red scarf by His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo in 1999 coinciding with the silver jubilee celebration. His Majesty The Fourth King also appointed him as the first secretary of DDC with its establishment in 1986.

 Dasho Sangay Dorji said he is extremely honoured to receive the recognition and appreciation from His Holiness.

 He said that during his service in DDC, he initiated the first Dzongkha grammar book compatible with Sumtag (chokyed grammar).

 All the Dzongkha terminologies compiled, he said, were used in the first Dzongkha dictionary and then in the English-Dzongkha dictionary.

Dasho was involved in drafting all the Dzongkha related legal terminologies, Acts and numerous books.

He said that he also initiated writing driglam namzha and culture history and biographies in Dzongkha. Dasho retired from service in October 2018.
