Jachungs wins the winter championship

Basketball: Jachungs defeated Phojas 74-65 in the finals of the winter basketball championship at swimming pool complex yesterday.

Jachungs took the lead by five baskets in the first quarter. Phojas defensive play in the second quarter brought the deficit to two baskets.

In the third quarter, Phojas nearly closed the gap but Jachungs’ persistent play towards the end of the quarter extended the lead by three baskets. In the last quarter, Jachungs further extended the lead by nine points.

His Royal Highness Dasho Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck of team Phojas was the highest scorer of the match with 27 points. Rinzi Wangchuk from Jachungs was awarded the most valuable player (MVP) of the match with 15 points, 16 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Jachungs took home the champions trophy and Nu 30,000 cash prize. The runners-up team was awarded a cash prize of Nu 20,000 and trophy.

Mikyo Dorji from team Crack Jacks was recognised as the most promising player of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Neulee Events organised the tournament to mark the 60th birth anniversary celebrations of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo in collaboration with Bhutan Basketball Federation.
