Local leaders worried water source at Buyang could dry up

Buyang stream is the only water source for Khamdang gewog in Trashiyangtse. It is located about 15km away from the gewog centre.

At the Dzongkhag Tshopgdu yesterday, local leaders of Khamdang said that cutting trees at the water source was a concern.

Khamdang Gup Norbu said that forest officers had to stop allowing people to fell trees at the water source. “If the water dries up, it would affect both Khadang gewog and the residents of Doksum town.”

More than 700 households depend on the stream for irrigation and drinking.

Mangmi Sangay Tempa said that about 60 per cent of trees had been cut near the water source. “We are worried.”

Ranger Lam Norbu said that Khamdang gewog people cut trees near the water source because getting timber form Yangtse was expensive.

Dzongdag Thuji Tshering said that the practice engendered severe water scarcity.

Tshogdu chairperson, Chosung Wangdi said, dzongkhag’s forest division, gewog administration and forest officials could discuss how best to protect the water source.
