A 26-year-old man was arrested on October 9 for alleged rape of a girl child at Tshangkha in Dagana.
According to police, it was found that the victim and the suspect were said to be in a relationship since last year. The victim is 13 years old and a class V student at a primary school. Both the victim and the suspect are from a nearby village.
The gewog administration reported the case to police on October 8.
According to sources, it was learnt that the parents of the victim informed the Principal of the school and the gup to settle the case mutually earlier this week.
However, since the girl was a minor, the case had to be reported to police.
Both the suspect and the victim were called to the police station for investigation. The suspect was then arrested.
It was learnt that the suspect took the girl from the school on October 6. Talks of marriage between the two parties’ parents and relatives took place around October 7.
According to police officials, the victim and the suspect admitted to having maintained physical relationship only since this September.
Police officials said that as the girl was a minor, the case is considered a rape whether it is with or without consent.
It was learnt that the rape of a child above 12 years of age is considered a second-degree felony. A person would have to serve a prison term of a minimum of nine years.
Police officials said that the case is still under investigation.
