Verdict: The Gelephu dungkhag court yesterday sentenced a 23-year-old man to 15 years imprisonment for murdering a 25-year-old man on May 27.

According to the verdict, Tenzin Jamtsho from Pemagatshel has to pay a minimum wage rate of Nu 125 per day for ten years to the parents of the deceased and also Nu 42,875 as compensation for funeral rites within a month of the verdict being made.

Tenzin Jamtsho killed his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend by hitting him on the head with a stone.

Tenzin Jamtsho and the deceased were sleeping in the same room when the incident occurred. The woman was sleeping in her own bedroom.

In the morning the woman heard a man screaming and rushed to the next room where she found Tenzin Jamtsho standing next to the victim who was bleeding from his head.

The victim suffered severe head injuries after being hit in the head with a stone.

After the police were alerted, a police team rushed to the scene and found the victim in critical condition and rushed him to the Gelephu hospital. He was later evacuated to Thimphu but succumbed to his injuries.

The verdict stated that Tenzin Jamtsho is liable for murder, which is a felony of the first degree, for which the maximum sentence is life and the minimum is 15 years.

“As the accused was not a repeat offender and also because he has committed the crime for the love he has for his ex-girlfriend and also because he was depressed, he was served with the minimum sentence,” the verdict stated.
Tenzin Jamtsho has appealed to the Sarpang dzongkhag court.
