Update 25 March, 2008 - The Druk Phuensum Tshogpa was formally declared as the Ruling Party by the Election Commission of Bhutan today, after having won 44 of the 47 seats to the National Assembly in yesterday’s election.
The People’s Democratic Party, having won 3 seats in the National Assembly, will be the Opposition Party. PDP’s Damcho Dorji won in Gasa, Rinzin Dorji in Chukha and Tshering Tobgay won in Haa.
Chief election commissioner, Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, said that the voter turn-out was 79.4 percent of the 318,465 registered voters. About 235,893 voted in the 865 polling stations on the electronic voting machine and 17,119 cast their votes through postal ballots.
