home

8 March, 2010 - Calling attention to advocate against domestic violence in Bhutan, Ms Robin Martz, an American living in Bhutan will run the 50 km highway between Thimphu and Paro, as Bhutan joins the world to observe International Women’s day today.

An avid marathoner and a social worker, 39-year-old Ms Martz has been running for the last 11 years. “I had opportunities to work with victims of domestic violence in the US and want to help RENEW with their work and create awareness on the issue,” Ms Martz said.

The mother of two expects to finish her run, which starts at 10am from Loselling primary school in Changjiji, by 4pm in Paro town. Her husband will join her from Chuzom check post to the finish line. All proceeds from the race will be donated to RENEW.

Last month, Ms Martz won the 13 km Phuentsholing marathon organised by the Tashi group. “Domestic violence must stop,” she said. Ms Martz has worked with the World Bank, UNFPA, USAID and Save the Children in the areas of maternal and child health.
