Bhutan formally opened an Honorary Consulate in Germany on October 11.
According to a foreign ministry spokesman Mr. Manfred Kulessa, President of the Bhutan Himalaya Society and Dr. Wolfgang Pfeiffer, were appointed as the two Honorary Consuls.
Dr. Wolfgang Pfeiffer’s jurisdiction will cover the four states of southern Germany and Dr. Manfred Kulessa will be looking after the four remaining states.
The official opening of the Honorary Consulate took place in Bietigheim-Bissingen, at the center of the town, in Bhutanese tradition with a large Guru Thongdrel and Bhutanese music.
Addressing a gathering of more than 160 people, including federal ministers, parliamentarians and the mayor, Bhutan’s ambassador to Geneva, Dasho Bap Kesang said that the opening of this Honorary Consulate marked an important milestone between Germany and Bhutan. “It is a reflection of our common desire to promote closer understanding and appreciation of each other’s people, culture and national identity,” he said.
Germany has assisted Bhutan in forestry, health, education, cultural activities and, most recently, with the Hanover EXPO 2000.
