25 October 2006 - Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck accepted the 2006 J. Paul Getty Conservation Leadership Award on behalf of His Majesty the King and the people of Bhutan at a function hosted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) at the Smithsonian Centre in Washington D.C. on October 17.

The award, which is administered by the WWF, is one of the world’s most prestigious awards devoted to conservation.
The President and CEO of WWF, Mr. Carter S. Roberts, who conferred the award stated that Bhutan’s leadership has made a conscious decision to place environmental protection at the centre of national life, going so far as to include it in the new Constitution. “WWF congratulates His Majesty for his far sighted approach to preserving some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife and habitats,” said the CEO.
Accepting the award, Her Royal Highness conveyed the deep appreciation of His Majesty the King, the government and the people of Bhutan. “The award is a source of great pride and encouragement for Bhutan and its people to continue their efforts towards environmental con-servation,” said Her Royal Highness.
The function was attended by WWF members of the Board of Directors and National Council.
