Couple dies of overdose

home 23 May, 2007 - Drug overdose was the cause of death of a young married couple in Phuentsholing who died on the same day but at different times, according to doctors of the Phuentsholing General Hospital. The man was aged 24 and the woman, 22.

The general medical officer, Dr. Kesang, told Kuensel that Kinlay Dorji was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state, at 1:15 in the afternoon by his wife and a hotel manager.

The wife disclosed to the doctor that her husband was a drug addict and had earlier in the day consumed some drug. She did not give any additional information nor inform his parents. The hotel manager, in the meanwhile, had left and was unavailable for any further clarification.

“He was frothing from his mouth and the results of a stomach wash indicated Relipen and Nitrosum tablets,” said Dr. Kesang.

Kinlay Dorji was declared dead at 1:45 pm and the case was forwarded to the police, according to Dr. Kesang.

In an unfortunate turn of events, later that evening the deceased’s wife, Karma Choden, was caught by the Jaigoan Police for misbehaving in public and was handed over to the Bhutan Police.

Police reported that she was in unconscious state and, suspecting drug consumption, was taken to the general hospital at 5:40 pm.

The doctor on duty, Dr. T.B Rana, said that her eye-pupils had dilated, she had no pulse and was not breathing which suggested that she was already dead.

“However, as there was some quiver under her chin, CPR was carried out and an oxygen tube inserted. Yellow and light pink residues of drug tablets were seen coming out from the gas tube,” said Dr. Rana.

Karma Choden had some Nepalese currency and some contact numbers in her purse. Both the deceased’s parents were informed and their bodies were taken from the hospital at 2:00 am yesterday, according to the hospital’s records.

This is the third death caused by drug consumption declared by the hospital this year, according to health officials. The case is still under investigation by the police.
