Mother charged for abandoning newborn

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) charged a 21-year-old woman from Gase Tshogom in Wangduephodrang to Punakha dzongkhag court for abandoning a newborn.

The suspect was staying with her sister in Lobesa when the incident occurred. Investigation revealed that she delivered the baby inside the toilet and threw the baby out of the toilet window on the night of July 22 this year.

The house owner heard a baby crying outside around 1am and found the baby lying in the bushes. She immediately called one of the neighbours and rescued the baby and informed the police.

During the investigation, it was found that the baby’s umbilical cord was still attached and police interrogated people in the locality. Police found bloodstains on the windowpane of the toilet and then took both the baby and the suspect for medical checkup.

According to the charges, the woman got pregnant when she was working in a hotel in Thimphu last year. A monk from the same village is the father.

It was stated that when the woman informed the monk when she was four months pregnant, he refused to accept the baby.

She was charged for violating section 215 and 218 of the Penal Code of Bhutan.
