2,088 A surreal feeling Ugyen Tshering wasn't jumping for joy in his house in Dop Shari
when the news of his winning was unofficially out on Monday evening,
December 31. But his relatives, friends and supporters were elated. The
43-year-old candidate was calm and confident throughout the process. But
he described the feeling as 'surreal' after winning the elections with
2,886 votes. He led by 798 votes against Jambay Dorji from Lungyi gewog,
who secured the second highest votes with 2,088. "It is surreal because
all four of us had fought equally and it could have been anyone
tonight," he said Ugyen Tshering said that he was confident from the
very beginning but this confidence was shaken few days before the poll
day, when he saw interviews of the other candidates on a newspaper. "I
realized that they were equally confident and I secretly worried that I
had not done enough to win," he said. Ugyen Tshering's lead in almost
five gewogs proved that he would win the elections. He received good
support from Tshento gewog, that did not have a candidate of its own,
with 324 out of 892 votes. "His strategy to win votes by being honest
and not promising anything during his campaign has worked, it seems,"
said an observer. However, the other candidate from Lango gewog, Ugyen
Tshering said that he was very disappointed as he had more supporters in
that gewog and had hoped for more than 70 percent of the votes in
Tshento. The greatest support came from his own gewog, Dop Shari, with
523 out of 973 votes. Most voters in the gewog were his relatives. The
candidate also cut deep in a gewog that already had its nominee. In one
of the polling stations in Wangchang gewog, Ugyen Tshering outscored the
gewog's candidate, Phub Dorji, by 34 votes.
