The National Council representative elect from Punakha, Namgye Penjore, exclaimed: "It was expected" when he found out that he was elected as the representative of Punakha dzongkhag on the eve of New Year.
"I knew I would win because I was very sincere in what I told people in my campaigns and meetings," he said between receiving telephone calls from friends and relatives at his crowded home in Khuruthang. The 41-year-old former general manager of Bhutan Power Corporation Ltd., was elected with a huge margin winning 3,509 out of the 7,148 votes cast at 30 polling stations.
Namgye Penjore chose to talk about his people instantly when asked if he was thrilled by the result. "I feel I am already under lot of pressure. I have to shoulder a big responsibility," said Namgye Penjore. "People trusted me and I have to live up to their expectations now."
Born and brought up in Punakha, Namgye Penjore has a masteršs degree in marketing and finance and held two general manager posts before he resigned to join politics. He was nominated twice by the people to represent the people to the erstwhile Royal Advisory Council. "I would have just occupied a seat in the Council had I been elected in the past," he said reasoning that he was inexperienced then. "Today I am elected with a difference."
Wife Namgay Lham is not surprised too. "I am excited, but this was expected because I knew my husband could make it," she said.
