"I was a bit apprehensive but I was expecting to win," said Jigme Wangchuk of Lauri gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar who beat his closest contestant, Kuenga Dorji, by 364 votes.
"It is a victory that has humbled me,² said the 28-year-old teacher, who holds a bachelors degree in education.
"I considered myself a lucky man because there was no other contestant from my constituency."
Jigme said that he visited their ancient lhakhang and offered prayers on the morning of December 31 before the voting began.
"It is our belief and I have full faith in the almighty," he told Kuensel via telephone from Daifam.
