LG: Nine former gups were nominated while three failed to garner enough votes in their chiwog zomdus.

The gups of Athang, Dangchu, Phobjikha, Sephu, Kashi, Nyisho, Gangtey, Bjena and Phangyul were nominated as candidates.

The former Thedthso gup, Phurba Namgay, 52, who was also a former thrizeen, lost to Khandu, a new comer from Rinchengang toed. The chiwog zomdu saw more than 185 voters.

Election officials said Khandu will be contesting against three candidates from Matalongchu, Wangjokha and Rinchengang moed chiwogs on September 27. Except for Thangu chiwog, the other four chiwogs have one candidate each. The gewog has completed its chiwog zomdus.

Former gup, Phurba Namgay, has served as gup and mangmi for more than 21 years.

Former Dagar gup, Kencho Namgyel, 35, also lost. The chiwog saw three aspirant candidates, Nado, Tenzin Jamtsho and Kencho Namgyel.

During the chiwog zomdu on August 20, the former gup, Kencho Namgyel, secured 69 votes and his contender Tenzin Jamtsho secured only 43, however the third contestant Nado got 105 votes.

Gewog officials said Nado will now contest against candidates from three other chiwogs. The gewog has five chiwogs. Except for Wogay chiwog, the four other chiwogs have a candidate each.

For Kencho Namgyel it is not the end. He said he will compete for the post of gup again in the next elections. The former non-formal education instructor was a class X graduate of 2002.

Former Nahi gup, Karpo Dorji, of Nabisa chiwog also lost to his contender Kinley Tenzin during the chiwog zomdu. Only two of the five chiwogs in Nahi have gup candidates. Kinley Tenzin will face a female contestant Sonam Zangmo during the upcoming election for gup and mangmis on poll day.

Meanwhile, three of the former 15 gups of Tshogwom, Gasey-Tshogoam and Rubesa gewogs have decided not to re-contest during this local government election.
