The general debate of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly begins today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Bhutanese delegation is led by Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who is accompanied by Foreign Minister Damcho Dorji and senior foreign ministry officials, a press release from the foreign ministry states.

The Prime Minister will deliver a statement on September 22. He will also hold bilateral meetings with senior UN officials and participate in side events.

The theme of the General Assembly is “Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”.

The General Assembly is the main body of the United Nations where decisions on important matters are made and where all 193 members of the United Nations have equal representation.

The outcome and proceedings of the General Assembly establish the scope and content of the multilateral agenda. lt also provides direction for intergovernmental decision making and processes.
