Inaugurating the College of Information Technology (IT) in Gyelpoizhing, Mongar, on October 6, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said the college would develop the country.

He reasoned out that through the establishment of IT college, there will be competent and quality IT professionals in the country.

He also cited the example of how the mobile phone services made things easier for Bhutanese people to emphasize that IT knowledge and skills are important for development.

The president of the college, Lhatu Jamba, said the management would work hard to produce skilled and capable IT professionals in the country.

The college started the academic session in July this year with 79 students, 13 lectures and 30 supporting staff.

Gyalpoizhing Central School’s (GCS) management handed over the school’s lower campus to the college in the beginning of the year. The school handed over the girl’s hostel, science laboratory, library, principal’s office, multipurpose hall, classrooms, and other structures.

The central school faces a shortage of hostel facility, classrooms and other infrastructure and as of now, the school has turned some of its classrooms to science laboratory and library. About 180 girls and 80 boys share beds.

The school will be handed over to the college by the end of next year as per the written agreement between the education ministry and the Royal University of Bhutan.
