Ten people suffered minor injuries, while a 62-year old woman, suffering from chest pains, was referred to Guwahati hospital after the choekhang (prayer hall) collapsed during the on-going moenlam chenmo in Samdrupjongkhar.
The injured are still in hospital while the woman referred to Guwahati is reportedly in stable condition and under observation.
There were around 200 people inside the choekhang when the collapse occurred on the grounds of the Samdrupjongkhar middle secondary school.
Devotees said more than 500 usually spent nights in the tent but because of the heavy rain, many had opted to spend the night outside.
The incident occurred at around 5am.
A devotee, Choni Zangmo, said that when the tent collapsed many were able to escape but a few remained trapped. “Just as I applied face wash to my face, suddenly one of the officials screamed that the tarpaulin was falling,” she said.
Screams of those trapped within the tent could be heard.
Desuups, police, other devotees, Samdrupjongkhar residents, and officials rescued those trapped within the collapsed tent.
Meanwhile, the moenlam chenmo, that has been presided by HH the Je Khenpo since the beginning of this month, has continued.
