Royal wedding at Domkhar dzong

Nuptials: His Royal Highness Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuck wed Yeatso Lhamo yesterday at the Domkhar dzong in Chumig, Bumthang, the maternal home of the bride.

The Domkhar dzong was built by His Majesty the second King Jigme Wangchuck in 1937 as a summer palace for himself and his elder Queen, Ashi Phuntsho Choeden.  It was restored in 2004 to be the residence of the then Trongsa Penlop, now the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

HRH Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuck was born to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Her Majesty The Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck.  Yeatso Lhamo is the daughter of Dhondup Gyeltshen and Sonam Chuki, and she is also the elder sister of Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen.

From morning until evening yesterday, Chamkhar town was almost deserted, as most of the local residents had gone to attend the wedding ceremony at the Domkhar palace.  Thousands of residents from the locality attended the wedding and they were also given an opportunity to offer khadar to the newly wed couple.

Residents said it was also a great opportunity to get to see His Majesty the Fourth King, His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen.

The wedding was a celebration with the community and was attended by His Majesty The King, His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, Their Majesties The Queen Mothers, members of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister, among others.
