A search team has been deployed to nab a detainee who escaped from Thimphu dzongkhag court around 10:30am on June 19.
A police official said that the detainee, a 28-year-old man, was under trial and he was taken to the court for hearing when the incident occurred.
Dorji Gyeltshen from Trong in Zhemgang was arrested in March this year for having involved in larceny. He is a repeat offender.
According to eyewitnesses, the detainee climbed over an iron fence near district court’s civil bench and then over the Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School wall. Police personnel on duty chased him but they could not nab him.
The police official said that detainees under trail are taken to the court during case hearings around 9am and they are kept in a detention room at the court before the hearing starts.
Handcuffs are removed when the detainees are about to enter the courtroom.
“The detainee escaped because of the negligence of the duty police personnel. We are investigating the lapses,” the official said.
Administrative action would be taken against the police personnel on duty.
People are requested to provide information should they know the whereabouts of the detainee.
