Team Chimpanzee wins F4F world championship

After three days of training at the international friendship camp in Moscow, Russia along with the young ambassadors from 211 countries, Sonam Rigzin played Football for Friendship (F4F) World Championship on June 12 at Sapsan Arena.

The championship saw 32 different teams of young players from across the world competing to win the F4F world champions title.

The event this year named the teams after endangered species of the world. The initiative was aimed at drawing attention to the problems of the extinction of rare animals.

Of the total 32 international mixed teams of friendship, Sonam Rigzin played as a goalkeeper along with the young players from the Netherlands, Djibouti, Guam, and Namibia to form team King Cobra.

The team was placed in Group-C along with the team- three-toed sloth, Roth chi’s Giraffe, and Chimpanzee.

Team King Cobra lost to Chimpanzee 0-2 to end their championship in the qualifying round. Team Chimpanzee comprised of players from Dominica, Malawi, Colombia, Benin, and Congo won the F4F World Championship 2018.

At the opening ceremony of the final match between team Chimpanzee and Komodo Dragons on June 12, Sonam Rigzin walked into the Sapsena Arena bearing the national flag to open the final.

Director general with Russian Football Union, Alexander Alaev said the project bringing together children from across the world was important for sports and personal growth. “It was amazing that just in three days of the friendship camp the children have managed to become friends and demonstrated a real team game,” he said.

The 6th season of the international children’s social programmes for the first time saw young players and young journalist come together to learn important values of peace, devotion, victory, traditions, and honor among others through football.

Chairman of the board of directors with PJSC Gazprom Victor Zubkov said we live in an age where people over the world seek to unite behind the principles of equality and respect for each other. “The project is a crucial element in this process. Football for friendship gives that opportunity to everyone,” he said.

The global event organised by Gazprom Company, the official partner of FIFA and World Cup Russia 2018 also involved children with disabilities, and a special award of Nine Values Cup for the greatest commitment to all F4F values. The cup this year was presented to Brazil national football team at the international children forum.

Kinley Deki who participated in the event as young journalist said the camp was about learning F4F nine values of friendship, equality, fairness, health, peace, devotion, victory, traditions and honor and applying it in daily lives.

“Representing the country as a young journalist gave me an opportunity to write articles for the football for friendship newspaper. It was an exciting experience in the camp and a good opportunity for the friendship and also to showcase our culture to others,” Kinley Deki said.
