The country should brace for major fire incidents and untimely rainfall going by the prediction from the institute of astrology in Pangrizampa, Thimphu.

The datho (astrological calendar) has it that untimely rainfall will lead to poor yield and livestock production. Although the year of the Monkey is considered inauspicious (lona), astrologers said that because it is also the year of the birth of Guru Rinpoche, it is still considered an auspicious year. “The Fire element coinciding with Mewa nyinag, which is this year, comes once in between 180 and 190 years,” astrologer, Sonam Rinchen of the institute said.

The astrologer said that there will be perfect harmony among the King, the government and the people this year.

“To avert disasters from fire and drought, offerings to Guru Rinpoche and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel should be made as a dothab (prevention),” he said.

Those born in the year of the Monkey (13, 25, 49, 61, 73, 85) are lodog (inauspicious) and should avoid long distance travels, visits to construction sites, cremation grounds and marriages.

Those born in the year of the Tiger and Ox are not compatible (Duenzur) with the Monkey and should avoid starting important ventures.

Those born in the year of the Dragon are compatible with the Monkey (Thuensum) and thus the year is not good for them. They should avoid visiting hot springs (tsachu and menchu).

Sonam Rinchen said that to avert bad luck, people who are lodog and thuensum should conduct rituals like Loka gi Lue, Thuensum gi Torchoe, Duenzur gi Torchoe, Bjabzhi and Tsedrup.

It is a good year for those born in the year of the Earth Sheep, 38 years (male) and Water Sheep, 14 (male). The datho recommends the two ages for important works like conducting of ground-breaking ceremonies.

Males born this year will become powerful and females will bring wealth in the family. However, as the Year is a Male, it is considered better for males to be born this year.

The second month of the Bhutanese calendar (from March 10 to April 8) and the eighth month (from October 3 to October 31) are considered Dhana or inauspicious months.
