Thimpchhu washes away student

A class IV student of Kuensel Phodrang Primary School in Thimphu died on August 10 after Thimpchhu washed her off from below the sports ground at Lungtenzampa.

The incident happened during the annual school’s sports day celebration conducted at the synthetic ground below Lungtenzampa. The girl was 11.

Sources said the deceased participated in a caterpillar race, which was the third last event of the day. “She won the race and stood on the victory stand,” a source said. “Five minutes later, we were told the tragic news of her being washed away by the river.”

The teachers and her family members who were also at the ground rushed to rescue her but it was too late.

Her body was recovered from Babesa and was immediately taken to the national referral hospital by an ambulance. She was declared dead when she reached the hospital.

It was learnt that the school authorities invited the parents to come for the event and made several announcements to take care of the children.
