Update: Of the five detainees that escaped from Thimphu city police station’s detention centre on December 20, police arrested three from a flat in Taba on December 22.

Police, however, are still looking for a Lobzang Nima, 28, from Punakha and Ugyen, 35, from Wangduephodrang.

While police said that they are investigating how the detainees absconded and refused to provide information, it was learnt that the detainees used their metal handcuffs to pierce the door of the detention centre and jump out the window of the visitor’s room.

Of the five detainees, four are under trial for alleged burglary and possession of controlled substances and one was convicted for non-compoundable prison term for burglary.

Although police said the detainees escaped in the evening, sources said the detainees escaped at 7pm.

Police said that any information leading to the arrest of the two escapees, who are still at large, will be rewarded Nu 20,000. “The identity of the informants will be kept confidential,” a police official said.
