Samdrupjongkhar dzongkhag dispute settlement body yesterday warned and fined three men with Nu 3,750 each for abetting disharmony and creating false rumours.

The three were charged for violating section 519 and 521 of the Election Act, 2008.

This was after Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) dzongkhag coordinator Tshering Dorji submitted a complaint letter with audio recordings of the three individuals to the election office. The complaint was made on October 3.

Tshering Dorji said that the three men had spread false rumours stating that the Indian government would be unhappy if DPT becomes the ruling government.

He added that one of the individuals also said that people living across the border would be affected immensely and wouldn’t be allowed to step foot in the Indian border. “They have all said different rumours. This is a rumour and people should know that it is false. The rumours have reached many people through various social media platforms.”

One of the men said that they had been supporters of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before the primary elections and later decided to support Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT).

One of the individuals said they had not bribed or warned someone to cast their votes but only shared their views. “It was a group chat for DNT and all we did was tried getting supporters. If we complain we have so many recordings and issues against them.”
