A windstorm on July 18 damaged 225 acres of maize fields and affected 810 households in Mongar.

Of the dzongkhag’s 17 gewogs, seven were severely affected. About 80 acres of maize fields were destroyed in Ngatshang. The windstorm destroyed 107 acres of croplands in Chaskhar and about 15 acres in Tsakaling. Ten households were affected in Tsamang, 36 in Mongar, 23 in Thangrong, and 42 in Drepoong.

Kelzang, a farmer, said, the storm damaged more than 95 percent of her crops. Ugyen Wangmo from Nadang village in Chaskhar is worried about her income. She has three school-going children.

In Ngatshang, Tshewang Lhamo, said that she now has only to look upon the government for some compensation.

Chaskhar gup said that when such disasters occur, the gewog can only compile reports and send it to the dzongkhag administration.

Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer Phub Dorji said that reports are being compiled from the gewogs.
