Tsirang District Court sentenced a 35-year-old woman from Mendrelgang to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

The sentence is non-compoundable, meaning the woman cannot pay thrimthue in lieu of prison term.

The judgment states that the woman, Lhazom, violated section 142 of the Penal Code of Bhutan, which states that a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of involuntary manslaughter if the conduct that leads to the death of the victim is committed during the defendant’s commission of a reckless act or a homicide that would otherwise be murder is committed under the immediate influence of extreme mental or emotional distress for which there is reasonable explanation or excuse.

The incident occurred on November 16 last year. The husband’s brother reported the incident to police. Upon investigation, police and medical team found the deceased’s body lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

The deceased was stabbed in the thigh and died from excessive bleeding.

Husband’s extra marital affair had led to the argument.

The couple resettled in Mendrelgang in 1997 and was married for last 15 years.
