In the ongoing Coca-Cola Bhutan National League tournament, which is played every Sunday, Yeedzin FC yesterday beat Drukpol FC 2-0.

That earned team Yeedzin three points, which, added to the rest of the scores it earned from the many matches it won so far went up to eight points.

The team moves to second place in the tournament.

It was Drukpol’s first loss in the tournament so far although it retained its top place in terms of the points at nine.

Yeedzin scored the first goal in the 34th minute of the game when one of the team’s defenders, Pema Rinzin kicked the ball from the centre for the team’s striker Yeshi Dorji to intercept the ball, which he then passed it over to the left winger Dawa Gyeltshen, who was dashing towards the post.

Finding himself in an awkward position to make an attempt at the goal post, he searched for a teammate to pass the ball.

That was when he saw the last person he expected to see near the goal post, the team defender Tshering Wangdi sneaking into the box area.

A gentle one touch pass from Dawa Gyeltshen, avoiding all other feet of the Drukpol defence, and it landed at Tshering Wangdi’s feet, who then chipped the ball into the post, while Drukpol goalie was caught in the heat of the moment at the box.

In the second half of the match, Drukpol FC returned more fierce, desperate to send in an equaliser making numerous attempts, all of which fell short though.

However, in the 79th minute, Yeedzin FC’s leftwinger Jigme Tenzin kicked the ball from outside the box towards Drukpol goal post, which one of its defenders Khandu tried to intercept with a heading, but the ball chipped past his head and landed inside the net. It was a suicide goal.

Drukpol FC coach Sangay Rinchen said they expected to win the match.

“Despite the loss, our overall performance was quite good actually,” he said.

Yeedzin FC’s Dophu said the coordination his team practiced paid off.

“This match displayed our team’s best performance so far,” he said.

In Phuntsholing football ground, Phuntsholing FC defeated Zimdra FC 3-2, while in Punakha football ground, Ugyen Academy FC won from Samtse FC 8-1.
